Algemeen beeld

During my study I have developed a number of skills and knowledge. My future plan is to become an architect with a lot of understanding and knowledge about structural engineering and design. I will specialize myself in the principles of structures which can be found in nature. To get a good understanding of these principles, the main target in my study lied in a combination of the disciplines of Architecture and Structural Design.

My goals in my future career will be based on research to the relation between forms and structures. Geometry, structures and the experiences of space by the users are the most important topics. I have done research in as well architectural as structural related topics. The designs which I like the best are mainly related to concepts, design principles and shapes which are found in nature. These shapes and structures need analyses to be used in the design of buildings and other objects. Structural knowledge in depth is a must for the analyses' of natural shapes and structures and theoretical architectural knowledge in depth is necessary to create concepts for future designs and design theories. A more important issue is to find equilibrium for the design and its surroundings. My ambition is to accomplish this by using organic shapes as if they came into existence in the area by itself.

In my designs I try to create optimal plays of forces, as very common seen in nature. Research skills in complex mechanical engineering are necessary to find and create new innovative and challenging structures. In my future career, my main objective is to be an architect and not to use my knowledge of structures as a blockade in my designs, but use it as a tool for new inventions and solutions.

Now that I graduated, I will continue my career as an architect and researcher. An example of this combination can be found in my graduation thesis of the structural research of the mechanism in my design 3D Adaptable Building Skin and the final building design Corpus Vivera Architectura. 3D Adaptable Building Skin is a facade element which can deform in shape and deform at wish into curved forms. The element exists of cylindrical inflatables and a woven structure of small steel cables. These kind of mechanisms will take in an important place in future architecture and are international already considered as very interesting for further investigation.

The graduation research has been very interesting for my personal development of understanding the relation between structure, play of forces and shapes. During the graduation project I developed a researcher's attitude, knowledge of mechanisms and design theory as an important skill to be an architect and researcher in my area of interest.

Some examples of glories architects I would like to name are the architects Santiago Calatrava, Antoni Gaudi, Norman Foster, Peter Rice and Manfredi Nicoletti. I think these architects use the right amount of necessary nature's simplicity, but still have a certain attractional complexity in their designs, structures, and choice of structural elements. This all is in equilibrium in a kind of concept philosophy related to the basics of the design.
