3D Adaptable Building Skin
In the project Human Tissue Inc. the design for a manipulable, deformable building skin was started. During the graduation project, the design was finished. Below a short description is given, but in the publication (f) more detailed descriptions can be found.
From human skin to facade element
3D Adaptable Building Skin is a design for a facade element which was found in the properties and structure of human skin. Properties like elasticity, 3D behavior, 3D deformability and to be able to give space to transports like pipes are directly translated in the design of the facade element. The design is based on the properties and inspired by the structures found in the structural layer (dermis) of human skin. The elements in the human skin structure were analyses and related to their structural behavior. The design is based on these analyses'. At the end, the cooperation of the different elements in the facade element takes care of comparable behavior and properties like human skin.
In the weaving structure of the design of 3D Adaptable Building Skin there seemed to be a possibility for an extra element (cable) which can manipulate the deformation of the whole element at will. Especially for its elastic deformable properties of the facade element, the facade element is capable of several different deformations. Under Publications (f) several papers can be found where the properties, the structure, forms of deformations and architectural possibilities are very well explained. When a building for example would be dressed with 3D Adaptable Building Skin, the building will be capable to deform in shape. Next to its dominant architectural expression, there are also possibilities for energy savings and volume adaptations at the inside and outside of the building.
