Relax and Meet
Opening Celebration May 4th 2006 at 4PM
After a long time of work and patients, the day finally came to festively open Relax&Meet. The chair was already placed three weeks ago and the surrounding terrain was slowly recovering. The day of the opening celebration was a beautiful sunny day in spring and everybody could see how Relax&Meet responds and adds to its surrounding.
Ir. Harry Roumen
The first speaker was Mr. Harry Roumen from the Board of Directors of the University. He respected the creativity in the designs of students and told us to be very proud on this new piece of art on the campus. Before (Beer Crate Bridge) he gave me a bottle of expensive champagne and this time he gave me another one. He promised that he would give me a whole box of bottles for my next plans.
Dr. Jacob Voorthuis
Jacob Voorthuis is known by his wise and beautiful stories, as he is well known for his knowledge about science, history and philosophy. He really appreciates Relax&Meet in the point of view of a static posture of movement. The shape of the movement was frozen at a certain point, like if a person stands on his hands and has thrown his legs backward. A true art piece of equilibrium. He quoted theories of Henri Bergson about movement in time and space. And of course he mentioned Freud about his theory of "ego" and "it" that the person who looks at the chair, makes his own relation to a familiar shape in his mind. It is up to the watcher what is in his mind. To complete his story he suggested that Relax&Meet was supposed to stand in a group of elements and not alone.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Dick Hordijk
Dick Hordijk told about the design contest as he was chair of the conference and told us to be very proud on this accomplishment and final result. He explained that the design contest was international and that innovation was one of the main goals. Now that Relax&Meet arrived in Eindhoven, a goal above his expectations was met. At the end of his story he responded on the comments from the other speakers about the need of more elements. People in this specific corner were chatting and laughing during this comments.
Word of Thanks
At the end, I say a couple of words to thank everybody who contributed to realize Relax&Meet. I especially thanked my girlfriend who always supported my ideas and gives me the space and freedom to realize and create my ideas. Finally the moment was there to cut the cordon, which would be done by Harry Roumen and I gave him the scissor.
Opening and surprise
Mr. Roumen came on the stage and started with a great surprise. The people in the corner discussed the possibilities to make another Relax&Meet and they decided to make at least a second one. I was really surprised and happy. After this surprise Katja was invited to cut the cordon, because she has been a very important person in my life. She did this in front of everyone and it was time to drink a glass of champagne. With my glass of champagne I seated in my chair Relax&Meet and enjoyed. This nice and sunny afternoon ended with some bites to eat and some extra champagne.
