Olympic Swim Stadium; Architecture
First of all, the current buildings had to be broken down and the new available space had to be analyzed for a new design. The surroundings of this area are very green and I wanted to respond on the surroundings in the design with an organic shape. The program of demands asked for big volumes of space and it was a challenge to arrange the needed spaces and facilities in the right configuration for communication in use. Many spaces had to be next to one another or just not at all. The building has several different groups of visitors, like the professional athletes, recreation swimmers, visitors, press, personnel, board of the facility and the organization of Olympic events.
The tribunes also had special demands; 1500 seats were permanent and another 1500 seats had to be removable. I placed the removable seats on a rolling track on a big concrete structure. The tribune can roll to the competition pool or to the diving pool, depending on the event taking place. The rolling tribune closed several spaces depending on its location at the time and this brings advantages in experience and use of these spaces.
The external shape had to by dynamic with an organic touch. The surroundings of the building demanded this and it also had to be a challenging design as this building is a representative facility of the Netherlands. I created three bows with describe the internal needed volume and had an external expression related to a diving movement, which relates directly to the dive sport. The membrane material between the bows has a double curvature and finish the concept of the design. The membrane kind of covers the space inside. Pictures of the design can be found on the link Impressions.
