Twisted Life; Architectuur
By using the city planning analyses of Ten Koolhaas of this district, I created a shape that reacts on the city's major traffic routes which are led around this building. This location is the entrance of downtown Eindhoven and borders the financial district. The nearby railway station and the many bicycle and pedestrian sidewalks make this location very complex as all the main routes of the city come together at this location.
The building had to form the entrance or gateway to downtown Eindhoven and become a landmark for this district, because visitors of Eindhoven are always confronted with this part of the city.
I found a dynamic shape of two buildings, inspired by the work of Norman Foster (Swiss Re) and Santiago Calatrava, by model studies. The two buildings cooperate structurally as they are attached to one another. The office tower leans back and is hold by the surrounding housing building. To emphasize the leaning back of the tower, the bottom was cut half. Vertical traffic will travel by elevator through the tower and the residents will reach their apartments by the pipes between the office tower and the apartment building. These pipes are torsionlike shaped to make believe that they are pulled plastically by the great forces to hold these two hanging buildings and keep them in equilibrium.
