Ontwerp Relax and Meet
Jurycommentaar
The jury unanimously has chosen Relax and Meet as first prize. Furthermore the jury decided to give an honourable mention to The Foliage and the design from Bogazici University. Because of the high quality, all designs are exhibited at the BIBM Exhibition and in this booklet. Whether a design is prize winning is mentioned there. Parts of the jury report for a number of the winning designs are:
Relax and Meet has a strong organic outlook. It consists of shapes without one single flat surface. The huge bulb at the base of each individual covering gives a leaning/sitting opportunity to two or three people. Grouped elements will form a secluded space with an open relation to the surrounding outside world. The material concrete is used in various thicknesses as required by structural demands. Most producers of precast concrete will not line up to be the first to produce the elements. However, there appear to be only two types of elements that are mirrored. Information about the production of this winning design can be found on pages 92 to 97 of this booklet.
Uitleg ontwerp
The design of the elements of this meeting point is formed by the human body.
The form describes the human body in his position of sitting, resting, talking and relaxing. The roof and the cover behind the back of a sitting person is for protection of wind and rain. This form describes no more than necessary and is a sum of persons in a ring of conversation. The ball on the other hand gives an extra function to this play. It can be used in many ways.
The material has his character written in the form. This design is a real concrete design and cannot be made by another material. This means that concrete is a very proper material for such organic forms and is very suitable for such forms and designs.
The loading behaviour of this form is optimal. The loading centre is right above his foot. This gives the form much stability and slenderness..Honesty in structure and production is very important. When shown how the element is made, makes it more characteristic. The line over the back of the elements confirms the form.
